The traditional 'Turku Biomaterials Days', organized by Turku Clinical Biomaterial Centre (TCBC) and National Doctoral Program for Musculoskeletal Disorders and Biomaterials (TBDP), will be held on Oct 28 and 29, 2010.
The topic 'Periprosthetic Infections and Their Control' will be covered by the lecture course given by prof. Geert Walenkamp (NL) and presentations by researchers in the field.
Prof. emer. Geert H.I.M. Walenkamp (MD, PhD) has clinical and scientifically been involved in orthopaedic infections since his orthopaedic career started in 1981. He has studied the pharmacokinetic aspects of local antibiotic therapy and its applications in osteomyelitis and infected prostheses. In the Netherlands, he acted as the last resort centre in the
treatment of orthopaedic infections, at the septic unit of Maastricht University Medical Centre. He has participated in many national committees for advises and guidelines in this field. He has focused also on prophylactic aspects: infection registration, perioperative prophylaxis, and advises regarding air handling constructions at the OP. He is one of the founders of the European Bone and Joint Infection Society.
